Gifted education aims at supporting children and youth in developing their potentials as well as possible. The best approach is simply to give support, and not focus on diagnostic findings, for one cannot see potential as such. Teachers can only see the achievement a pupil is prepared to show. A wide range of methods and a motivating learning environment form the basis for enhancing children’s motivation to discover their potential and turn it into real achievement.
The fostering of excellence continues from where gifted education has shown to be successful by offering pupils (and later on students) the opportunity to complement and heighten the performance they have already achieved in a specific area.
Gifted education and the fostering of excellence depend on and complement each other in their endeavour to support and develop the talents of all pupils and at the same time foster top achievement. Measures taken to provide gifted education are a benefit not only for individuals but for all teachers as well as students.
